Clarence has a simple way of moving through the world: he treats everyone the way he hopes they’ll treat him — with kindness, warmth and a whole lot of hugs.

The 4-year-old golden retriever mix never experienced life inside a home. For years, he lived outdoors in his family’s yard, until one day they drove him to a Walmart parking lot, let him out of the car, and left him behind.
Confused and alone, Clarence found comfort in the company of two other abandoned dogs — a German shepherd and a Chihuahua mix — quietly following them around as if hoping safety might come from staying together.

Eventually, animal control picked up Clarence and the German shepherd and tracked down their owner. But instead of coming to get them, the owner refused. With no one willing to claim him, Clarence was placed on the euthanasia list.
Just in time, a rescue group called Hounds In Pounds stepped in. They pulled Clarence and his shepherd friend from the list and promised them something they’d never truly had before — a second chance.

Despite everything he endured, Clarence shows no fear or bitterness toward people. Instead, he leans into them, wrapping his paws around legs, clinging tightly as if saying, “Please don’t leave.”
“He is sweet, gentle, and deeply grateful to be safe,” Hounds In Pounds shared. “His golden coat reminds us of sunshine — and so does his personality. He brings warmth and light wherever he goes.”
Clarence gets along effortlessly with everyone — dogs, cats, children — and seems happiest simply being near someone he trusts.

“He’s an angel,” said Cat Suzuki, founder of Hounds In Pounds. “He just wants to be by your side. He’s a total mush.”
Soon, Clarence will travel from Georgia to New Jersey, where he’ll begin searching for his forever home. His rescuers believe he’ll thrive with a family who’s often around — someone who enjoys quiet companionship, movie nights, and long snuggle sessions.
Clarence is ready to give the biggest hugs of his life.
This time, he’s hoping someone will hold him back — and never let go.
