In a Detroit neighborhood, residents were accustomed to seeing a gentle German shepherd strolling happily beside her owner. The senior dog, later named Nikki, loved greeting neighbors and soaking in every bit of attention. But one day, people noticed her walking alone — and their hearts sank.

Her owner had passed away.
“After that, she just started wandering the neighborhood with her stuffed toy,” said Gail Montgomery, cofounder of Almost Home Animal Rescue League.
Grieving and confused, Nikki clung to a large plush toy for comfort. She carried it everywhere, refusing to drop it no matter what.
“Most stray dogs don’t hold onto toys — they’re focused on finding food,” Montgomery explained. “But this was her security.”

For weeks, Nikki roamed her familiar streets searching for a family she no longer had. Neighbors left out food and water while trying to contact a rescue. Eventually, they reached South Lyon Murphy Lost Animal Recovery, who spent several days attempting to bring Nikki in safely.
When rescuers finally managed to capture her, she still refused to let go of her treasured toy.

“That stuffed animal was her comfort,” Montgomery said. “It was like her version of a baby blanket.”
Once rescued, Nikki was brought to Almost Home Animal Rescue League — toy still in her mouth. Both she and the stuffed animal were in rough condition, but the team was determined to give them both a fresh start.
While veterinarians examined Nikki, staff members washed, repaired, and revived her beloved toy.
“It was filthy and torn,” Montgomery said. “We cleaned it, sewed it up, and gave it right back to her.”
Tired after her medical checkup — which revealed she had heartworm — Nikki immediately curled up next to her newly restored toy, using it as a pillow as she drifted off to sleep.
Nikki’s story soon spread, and strangers from everywhere began sending her new stuffed toys.
“Everyone’s sending her stuffies now,” Montgomery said. “We have so many!”

For Montgomery, who has worked in rescue for over two decades, Nikki holds a special place in her heart.
“She’s one of the sweetest dogs you’ll ever meet,” she said. “There’s just something about her. I love her so much.”
Not long after arriving at the rescue, Nikki found a foster home where she’s continuing her medical treatments. Her foster family adores her, and Montgomery receives regular updates showing Nikki surrounded by more toys than she ever dreamed of.
For a dog as loving as Nikki, there’s no such thing as too many stuffed toys — and at last, she’ll never have to walk the streets alone again.
