When the team at SPCA of Wake County welcomed a new rescue in early October, they knew he was special — though not for the usual reasons. The small terrier mix instantly caught everyone’s attention, not for his size or age, but for his wonderfully peculiar looks.
“He bears an uncanny resemblance to a badly taxidermied meerkat,” joked Samantha Ranlet, SPCAWC’s communications manager. “We love him to bits for it — but yes, he really does.”
Banjo, as staff soon named him, had come from a crowded shelter where older dogs like him rarely got noticed. He was timid, slow-moving, and unsure of the world around him — the kind of dog that tugs at every rescuer’s heart.
“If there’s one thing that gets us every time, it’s a nervous or senior dog,” Ranlet said. “Naturally, everyone on our team made it their mission to spoil him and win his trust.”
It didn’t take long for Banjo to realize he was finally safe. With gentle encouragement and endless affection, the little terrier began to open up — and once he did, his quirky, hilarious personality started to shine through.
Somewhere in his past, Banjo had learned a trick that would soon become his signature move: “sit pretty.”
“He just pops into it all the time, without being asked,” Ranlet said, laughing. “He walks around, sits up on his hind legs like a little meerkat, and looks so proud of himself — like he’s about to earn a thousand treats.”
The staff never got tired of watching Banjo’s random bursts of joy. His constant “sit pretty” poses became the highlight of their days, turning the shy rescue into the shelter’s most beloved comedian.
“This little werewolf potato is a walking ray of sunshine,” SPCAWC wrote in a Facebook post. “Banjo may not be polished, but that’s what makes him perfect.”
Soon enough, Banjo’s big personality won over more than just the shelter staff — it won him a family. Within weeks, the “plump little meerkat masterpiece” was adopted into a loving home, complete with a new canine sibling and doting parents.
Now, Banjo spends his days napping in sunbeams, playing with his new friend, and performing his favorite “sit pretty” routine for anyone who’ll watch.
“We’re so happy for him,” Ranlet said. “He’s finally living the life he deserves.”
