Jessie Goetze was driving along a rocky beach in New South Wales, Australia, when she spotted a dog trotting near the shoreline. There was no one else around, which made her wonder if he’d somehow gotten separated from his family.

She stopped her car and carefully tried to coax him over, but the nervous pup darted away. Hoping someone might recognize him, she posted the photos she’d taken online. The comments quickly revealed the truth: the dog hadn’t wandered off — he’d been abandoned.
From that moment, Goetze felt responsible for him. She started returning to the beach every day, often several times, hoping to earn his trust. Every time she arrived, she found him standing in the water, staring out at the ocean as if he were waiting for someone who would never come back.

“It was heartbreaking watching how determined he was to find his owner,” she later shared in a video with The Dodo.
For more than a month, Goetze kept trying. But the dog, still hurting from what he’d been through, was terrified of people and stayed far out of reach.
Then one day, everything shifted. He cautiously approached, took food right from her hand, and moments later curled up in her lap. That was the moment he finally let her in.

Goetze brought him home and named him Ocean — a tribute to the place he had waited so faithfully. To her surprise, Ocean immediately blossomed around her family, especially her young children. His tail seemed to wag nonstop as he soaked in the affection he’d been missing for so long.
“He just looked so happy to be around people again,” Goetze said.

When Ocean was fully settled and thriving, Goetze connected him with a woman eager to give him a forever home. Saying goodbye was bittersweet, but knowing he was safe, loved, and finally moving forward brought her immense peace.
“It brings me so much joy knowing he found this incredible home,” she said.
