A Starving Dog Was Tied So Tightly to a Pole He Couldn’t Sit Down. Then a Florida Deputy Reached Out—and He Placed His Paw in Her Hand.

When Broward Sheriff’s Office Deputy Angela Laurella approached a severely malnourished dog tied to a pole in Pompano Beach, Florida, she could see how badly he needed help.

It was August 2021.

The dog’s leash had been secured so tightly that he couldn’t even sit down.

She Went to the Animal Shelter to Donate Her Late Mother’s Old Towels. She Never Expected a Frightened Little Dog to Help Her Feel Less Alone.

His ribs stood out beneath his skin.

His eyes appeared sunken.

And his thin body showed the effects of going without the care and nourishment he needed.

He had been left outside, unable to move freely or find a comfortable position.

Deputy Laurella approached carefully.

She extended her hand toward him.

The dog watched her.

Then, rather than pulling away, he slowly lifted one of his front paws.

And placed it gently in her hand.

Laurella stayed beside him.

The dog lowered his head and allowed her to stroke him.

He didn’t bark at her.

He didn’t react aggressively.

Despite his condition, he accepted the contact of someone who had come to help.

The moment would become one of the most memorable details of his rescue.

The dog was later named Liam.

And the encounter beside that pole marked the beginning of a very different life.

A Dog Who Couldn’t Even Rest

Liam’s condition was alarming.

He was severely underweight, and the leash restricting his movement made an already difficult situation worse.

An animal in his condition needed much more than someone to untie him.

He needed medical attention, proper nutrition, and somewhere safe to recover.

Deputy Laurella helped get Liam to safety and contacted 100+ Abandoned Dogs of Everglades Florida, an animal rescue organization led by Amy Roman.

The organization was already caring for more animals than it comfortably had room for.

Taking in another dog would mean additional food, veterinary expenses, and daily care.

But Liam needed immediate assistance.

When Roman learned about his condition, she agreed to accept him.

Liam was brought into rescue care.

And the people responsible for helping him began addressing the physical effects of his neglect.

He weighed just 17 pounds.

That number made the seriousness of his condition difficult to ignore.

He needed carefully managed feeding and ongoing veterinary attention.

Recovery wouldn’t happen in a single afternoon.

He would need time.

Consistent care.

And people willing to help him regain his strength gradually.

The First Days of Recovery

The rescue team began providing Liam with the attention he needed.

His feeding routine included carefully portioned meals, with chicken and rice among the foods prepared for him.

He was offered small amounts regularly as his condition was monitored.

Veterinary visits were part of his recovery.

So was something much simpler.

A comfortable place to rest.

When Deputy Laurella first found Liam, his leash had prevented him from sitting down.

Now he could settle without something pulling tightly against his neck.

He could lie down when he was tired.

He could sleep without being restrained against a pole.

And he could eat in a place where people were paying attention to his needs.

Those may sound like ordinary things.

For most family dogs, they are.

A bowl of food.

Somewhere comfortable to sleep.

A person nearby who notices when something is wrong.

But for Liam, they represented a major change from the circumstances in which he’d been discovered.

His body was still weak.

He still needed treatment.

And nobody could expect him to recover immediately.

But he was finally receiving the care he needed.

The Little Gesture He Kept Making

As Liam began recovering, the volunteers got to know his personality.

They discovered that he enjoyed human attention.

He was affectionate with the people caring for him.

He seemed comfortable being near them.

And he continued doing something that reminded everyone of his first encounter with Deputy Laurella.

He offered his paw.

It was the same simple gesture he’d made while standing beside the pole.

The first time, he had been painfully thin and unable to sit.

Laurella had reached toward him.

And Liam had placed his paw in her hand.

Now, as the rescue team helped him recover, he continued extending his paw toward people.

The volunteers found the behavior especially endearing.

They couldn’t know what Liam understood about his rescue or why he chose to make that gesture.

It may have been something he’d learned earlier in life.

It may simply have been one of the ways he was comfortable interacting with people.

But to those caring for him, it was a reminder of how gently he’d responded when Laurella first approached.

The dog who had been found in such poor condition was showing them an affectionate, sociable side of his personality.

He wasn’t defined only by what had happened to him.

He was Liam.

A dog who enjoyed attention.

Who wanted company.

And who seemed especially fond of offering his paw.

Little by Little, He Got Stronger

Recovering from severe malnutrition requires patience and appropriate medical supervision.

Liam couldn’t make up for everything he’d been through simply by eating a large meal.

His health had to be monitored as he regained strength.

The rescue team continued caring for him.

They followed his feeding and treatment needs.

Made sure he could rest comfortably.

And gave him regular attention.

Gradually, his condition improved.

He became stronger.

And as he recovered, he had more opportunities to enjoy the everyday activities that had been difficult or impossible when he was first found.

The changes weren’t just about his weight.

They were about giving him the chance to live comfortably.

A chance to move without being restricted by a short leash.

To rest when he needed to.

And to experience consistent care from people who wanted him to get better.

For the rescue workers, watching Liam improve was especially rewarding because they knew how serious his condition had been when he arrived.

The dog who had weighed only 17 pounds was beginning to regain his health.

And there was another important possibility ahead of him.

A permanent home.

A Family With an Unexpected Connection

After receiving veterinary treatment and time to recover, Liam found a permanent home.

His adopters were two members of the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

The same agency whose deputy had responded when Liam was discovered tied to that pole.

It was a meaningful connection to the people who had helped start his rescue.

The dog who had once been unable to sit down could now move around a home.

He could climb stairs.

Explore familiar rooms.

And settle somewhere comfortable when he wanted to rest.

He no longer had to spend his days restrained beside a pole.

He had people responsible for feeding him, caring for him, and making sure his needs were met.

His new home offered something that hadn’t been available to him when Deputy Laurella found him.

Stability.

Instead of wondering when he would receive his next meal, Liam had a regular routine.

Instead of being left outside in a condition that threatened his health, he had people looking after him.

And instead of facing recovery alone, he had a family.

The Moment That Started It All

When people hear about Liam, they often remember the photograph or description of his condition.

The protruding ribs.

The sunken eyes.

The leash that was too short for him to sit.

Those details matter because they show how urgently he needed help.

But there is another image from his story that is just as important.

A deputy approaching a frightened, severely underweight dog.

An open hand.

And a small paw reaching forward.

It was a quiet interaction during a difficult rescue.

Deputy Laurella didn’t know how Liam’s recovery would unfold.

She couldn’t promise how quickly he’d regain his health.

And at that moment, nobody knew he would eventually find a home with two other members of the Sheriff’s Office.

Her immediate concern was getting him help.

Afterward, other people became part of that effort.

Amy Roman and the rescue organization agreed to care for him despite their limited capacity.

Veterinary professionals addressed his medical needs.

Volunteers provided food and daily attention.

And eventually, his adoptive family gave him a place to live.

Liam’s recovery required more than one act of kindness.

It took several people making the decision to help.

From a Pole in Pompano Beach to a Permanent Home

The difference between the beginning and the later part of Liam’s story is difficult to overlook.

In August 2021, he was found tied to a pole in Pompano Beach.

He was severely malnourished.

His movements were restricted.

And his body urgently needed medical care.

Then Deputy Laurella stopped to help him.

She reached out.

And Liam placed his paw in her hand.

That interaction didn’t solve his medical problems.

But it was followed by the actions that made his recovery possible.

He was brought to safety.

Taken into rescue care.

Given food and veterinary treatment.

And eventually adopted into a permanent home.

The dog who once couldn’t even sit down was finally able to move freely and rest comfortably.

There is no way to know precisely what Liam was thinking when he first offered his paw.

He couldn’t have known the plans being made for his care.

Or that people he had never met would help him recover.

But his gentle response to Deputy Laurella became a memorable part of his story.

One deputy recognized an animal in desperate need and stopped to help.

One rescue organization agreed to take him in despite already having more dogs than it had room for.

And two members of the Sheriff’s Office eventually welcomed him into their home.

Liam’s life changed because people followed that first moment of compassion with the care and commitment he needed.

And when you think back to where it all began, it’s hard not to remember the simplest detail.

A severely underweight dog, standing beside a pole because his leash was too short for him to sit.

A deputy offering him her hand.

And Liam gently placing his paw inside it.

That little paw belonged to a dog who desperately needed a second chance.

Thanks to the people who helped him, he got one. ❤️🐾
