A shepherd dog disappeared while working near livestock in northern Italy and ended up stranded on a narrow mountain ledge thousands of feet above sea level. For two days, his barking echoed across the rocky slopes before hikers finally heard him. What followed was a remarkable rescue involving a drone, a helicopter and a firefighter lowered onto the side of the mountain.
For nearly two days, somewhere high on the rocky face of Rocca La Meja in northern Italy, a dog kept barking.
There was no one beside him.
No trail beneath his paws leading safely home.
Only a narrow piece of rock, the steep mountainside around him and a vast drop below.
The shepherd dog had wandered away from his owner and the cattle he had been accompanying in the mountains near Canosio, a small community in the province of Cuneo in Italy’s Piedmont region.
At some point during that journey, he reached a section of the mountain from which there was apparently no easy way back.
Italian broadcaster Rai reported that the dog became stranded on a rocky outcrop at roughly 2,600 meters — about 8,500 feet — above sea level. Beneath the ledge was an estimated 700-meter drop, or roughly 2,300 feet.
For a dog accustomed to moving through open mountain country, the situation had suddenly become very different.
He could not simply retrace his steps.
The surrounding terrain was too steep and exposed, and reports from the area described the animal as unable to move either back up the mountain or safely down from the ledge.
So he remained there.
And he barked.
A Sound Coming From the Mountain
In a landscape as large and rugged as the Italian Alps, finding one missing dog can be extraordinarily difficult.
Rocca La Meja rises over the upper Maira Valley, an area of dramatic limestone formations, steep slopes and high mountain plateaus. From a distance, a dog standing against the rock could easily disappear into the landscape.
But sound travels differently across mountains.
And eventually, someone heard him.
According to Rai, two hikers in the area picked up the sound of barking coming from the mountainside after the dog had been missing for roughly two days.
They raised the alarm.
It was the moment that changed the course of the story.
Until then, the dog was somewhere on an enormous wall of rock.
Rescuers now knew he was alive.
The next problem was determining exactly where he was.
Looking across such rugged terrain from the ground was not enough. The steep walls, rocky projections and changes in elevation made it difficult to locate the source of the barking with precision.
So a drone was sent up.
From above, the search finally became clearer.
The drone located the dog standing on the small rocky ledge, providing rescuers with the position they needed to begin planning how to reach him. Rai reported that the drone helped identify the animal on the outcrop above the approximately 700-meter precipice.
Now they could see him.
Getting to him was another matter.
Reaching Him From the Ground Was Too Difficult
Mountain rescues are rarely as simple as knowing where someone — or something — is.
The safest route for the person stranded may not be safe for the people trying to reach them.
In this case, reports described the section of Rocca La Meja where the dog was trapped as particularly difficult to approach from the ground. The narrow ledge and steep surrounding rock created a dangerous environment not only for the animal but also for anyone attempting to climb directly toward him.
The firefighters needed another approach.
They would come from above.
Italy’s Vigili del Fuoco — the national fire and rescue service — dispatched a helicopter to the mountain.
Its name was Drago 71.
On the afternoon of September 14, the aircraft made its way toward the exposed section of Rocca La Meja where the dog had been located.
Video recorded during the operation shows just how unusual the rescue was.
The helicopter could not simply land beside the dog.
There was nowhere to land.
Instead, one of the rescuers had to descend from the aircraft toward the rock face.
Suspended beneath the helicopter, the firefighter was gradually lowered toward the small ledge where the shepherd dog had spent his long wait.
Above was the aircraft.
Below was the mountainside.
And on the ledge was a dog who could not know that the person descending toward him was there to take him home.
The Firefighter Reaches the Ledge
For an animal already isolated for an extended period, the arrival of a helicopter could have added another challenge.
Helicopters bring noise, wind and movement — all potentially stressful for an animal standing in an exposed position.
That meant the final approach had to be controlled.
According to Italian reports, the rescue team successfully reached the dog, secured him and prepared him to be lifted from the mountainside.
There was little room for unnecessary movement.
The goal was no longer to persuade the dog to find his own way out.
There was no safe route for him to take.
The rescuers would have to remove him from the ledge entirely.
Once the firefighter was close enough, the dog was secured for the aerial recovery.
Then, after roughly two days on the mountain, his paws finally left the ledge.
This time, however, he was not falling.
He was going up.
The helicopter lifted the rescuer and the dog away from the rock face and brought them aboard.
The narrow outcrop that had held the animal for so long began to disappear beneath them.
Italian news outlets later published footage supplied by the firefighters, showing portions of the dramatic recovery from the mountain wall.
The most important part of the operation was already complete.
The dog was safe.
Waiting Below Was the Person He Knew
There was still someone waiting for him down in the valley.
His owner.
Rai reported that after the helicopter rescue, the dog was brought back down and handed over to the owner who had been waiting below.
After two days of uncertainty, the disappearance had an ending.
And remarkably, the dog appeared to have escaped the ordeal without serious physical harm.
TG La7 reported that the rescue concluded without injury to the animal, while other local reporting said he was recovered in good condition.
Considering where he had been found, that outcome was striking.
High-altitude environments can expose an animal to changing temperatures, wind and limited access to food and water. Remaining on a small ledge also leaves little opportunity to rest normally or move around.
Yet when rescuers finally reached this dog, he was still there.
Still waiting.
Still alive.
And, most importantly, still able to go home.
The Barking That Made the Difference
There is one part of the story that is easy to overlook once the helicopter appears.
Before the aircraft.
Before the drone.
Before the firefighter descending toward the mountainside.
There were two hikers who heard a dog barking.
That simple detail may have been the most important moment of all.
Rai reported that the hikers heard the animal after approximately two days and alerted authorities.
Had they assumed the sound was coming from somewhere else, the situation could have continued much longer.
Instead, they stopped.
They listened.
And they reported what they had heard.
That led to the drone.
The drone led rescuers to the ledge.
And once the dog’s exact location was known, the firefighters could begin planning the helicopter operation that ultimately brought him down.

On September 14, firefighters from the Vigili del Fuoco completed the rescue using the Drago 71 helicopter, lowering a rescuer to the difficult section of the mountain and bringing the dog aboard.

In reality, they are usually a chain of smaller decisions.
